Hi David

Thank you for your very prompt reply and my apologies for taking so long to get back to you.

After reading a description of the open grassy sites available for tenting at Ruckle, I think we will make it a day trip through there. I grew up in the trees and still feel deprived when I don't have them around me...besides the fact that I prefer more privacy anyway while tenting. We will probably be bringing our bikes but It sounds like the chances for getting a treed campsite for our old jalopy would be slim....unless there is a private campground somewhere. I have only come across one in all my looking so far, but on another gulf island. If there IS a private or more secluded campground on Salt Spring, then we would definitely consider that. I generally find the standardized government campsites remind me of a small city. I lived in the REAL woods basically for 17 years up country, so it really doesn't appeal all that much, if given a choice. Probably feels very adventurous to those who have lived all their lives in the city.

Would love to take a trip to see the Orcas. Haven't been out whale watching yet, but definitely want to...just a bit pricey from the information I have seen in Victoria, I guess. But maybe we should bite the bullet on this trip and take it in. Would be wonderful to get some pictures too.

Thanks again for your reply and your offer of help. At present the plan is to arrive on Salt Spring Friday July 24, and as early in the morning as possible IF we decide to camp there. No government campground reservations available at Ruckle...so first come first served.

Best regards, Ferne

Dear Gatekeeper:

Today is my first day on The Nature Hut and because I am not familiar with the routine on this site, I thought I would send you a semi-direct note, in the hope that you would take a look at what I have entered on the site. I was originally attracted to the site by a link on a garden group and the fact that it appeared to be run from Victoria. I saw, I read & I intend to stay.

In the process of familiarizing myself with the site, I came across your discussion with Gretchen. I hope you haven't taken that experience too much to heart. I wouldn't have wanted to be on the end of that lady's "concern" myself. Likely most of us don't loose our perspective quite so thoroughly.

There are a number of things that appeal to me about this site...but to get to the point, I would appreciate your taking a look at my first discussion. It is mostly a selfish request for some brief and basic information on birding and tenting in the Gulf Islands.

My partner and I are heading to the gulf islands for the first time in the last half of July for some birding and photography and I was hoping you would be kind enough to offer a bit of advise to a fellow nature lover if you have the time. Any other comments are under The Gulf Islands under Other Nature Topics , along with a fairly random (butterfly) picture from my backyard on the Thompson River in Kamloops.

Now is just remains to be seen if you are still actively connected to this site. Here's hoping!.

Cheers, Ferne Dalton,

I really am taking offense to your responses . You live in the United States and should keep your sharpness for people that you mean it for. The little guy spent 20 minutes with us to recover. Are you suggesting I leave him lying around to die?

Thank you for directing me to The Dereila Nature Inn. Lovely site. Beautiful photos. I have been to many of those parks on the special places page. I feel reminiscent to see photos of familiar sights.

It was a little too much about the Grand Canyon and Yellowstone. It was interesting, but I only watched the first 3 episodes. Have a look at the link to Special Places that we have photographed and added to our main site, The Dereila Nature Inn. I...

Yes, it was certainly very exciting. I returned to the same area this summer - but not sign of the fox, I'm afraid.
